Your planning results
Planning estimate only. Product coverage, field measurements, code requirements, structural conditions and contractor scope can change the final quantity or price.
How this calculator works
The calculator adds waste to the roof area, divides by 100 to get roofing squares, multiplies by the product’s bundles-per-square coverage and rounds up. Starter and ridge-cap quantities use their own linear coverage, while underlayment and nails are separate allowances.
Understanding the result
Complete bundles are shown because partial bundles are not a reliable purchasing unit. A default of three bundles per square is common for many laminated shingles, but premium or specialty products differ; enter the coverage printed in current manufacturer documents. Ridge cap may be purpose-made or cut from approved shingles depending on the system.
Shingle planning reference
| Option | Planning use | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Three-tab | Often 3 bundles/square | Confirm current package coverage |
| Architectural | Often 3 bundles/square | Weight and exposure vary by product |
| Premium asphalt | May exceed 3 bundles/square | Use the exact data sheet value |
| Hip and ridge cap | Linear coverage | Do not assume field-shingle bundle coverage |
Worked Fresno planning example
A 2,000-square-foot roof with 12% waste becomes 2,240 square feet, or 22.4 squares. At three bundles per square, the math produces 67.2 bundles and rounds upward to 68 complete bundles. Starter, ridge cap and underlayment are then rounded independently.
Fresno-specific considerations
Color and solar reflectance can affect roof surface temperature in Fresno sun. Confirm cool-roof documentation when the project requires it, and compare wind rating, algae resistance, warranty terms and approved underlayment as separate product decisions. Do not reduce waste below what the cut plan and manufacturer allow.
California roof-energy requirements vary by assembly and compliance path; review the California Energy Commission residential compliance guidance when material or reflectance choices affect the project.
