Your planning results

Planning estimate only. Product coverage, field measurements, code requirements, structural conditions and contractor scope can change the final quantity or price.

How this calculator works

The calculator expands the entered area by the selected waste allowance, divides that coverage by panel width times panel length, and rounds every panel upward. Metal and profile choices adjust the installed range; complexity, pitch, stories and tear-off are then applied. Ridge, valley and flashing measurements remain visible as a trim total.

Understanding the result

Panel count assumes a consistent average length and effective coverage width, not the full manufactured width. Valleys, hips, penetrations, end laps, cut plans and supplier nesting can change the order. The shingle comparison uses the same calculated area and current architectural-shingle midpoint so the two systems can be discussed on a consistent area basis.

Metal profile comparison

Option Planning use What to verify
Standing seam Concealed clips/fasteners Detailed fabrication; premium installed range
Exposed fastener Visible fasteners Lower initial range; periodic fastener inspection
Metal shingles Small interlocking units More pieces and detailed edges
Stone-coated panels Profiled coated steel Verify system weight, battens and trim

Worked Fresno planning example

An 1,800-square-foot roof with 10% waste becomes 1,980 square feet of planned coverage. A 16-inch-wide panel averaging 20 feet covers about 26.67 square feet, so the starting panel count is rounded up to 75. Trim and fasteners are then estimated separately before cost allowances are displayed.

Fresno-specific considerations

Metal can perform well under Central Valley sun, but finish reflectance, attic design, underlayment, expansion details and ventilation all matter. Standing seam hides fasteners and typically requires more fabrication and skilled labor; exposed-fastener panels use visible fasteners that need correct placement and long-term inspection. Copper and zinc are premium specialty choices and move the range substantially.

California roof-energy requirements vary by assembly and compliance path; review the California Energy Commission residential compliance guidance when material or reflectance choices affect the project.

Frequently asked questions

Is panel width the full sheet width?

Use effective coverage width after overlaps or seam engagement, not the raw coil or sheet width.

Why are standing seam ranges higher?

They commonly include concealed clips, formed seams, detailed flashing and more specialized fabrication and installation.

Are fasteners exact?

No. Clip spacing, wind design, substrate and manufacturer details control the final count.

Does metal require tear-off?

It depends on the existing assembly, condition, local requirements and the engineered or manufacturer-approved installation method.

Can the calculator price copper accurately?

It provides a broad planning multiplier. Copper and zinc should be priced from current supplier and fabricator quotes.
