Your planning results
Planning estimate only. Product coverage, field measurements, code requirements, structural conditions and contractor scope can change the final quantity or price.
How this calculator works
Truss quantity is the ceiling of building length divided by on-center spacing, plus one closing truss. Roof rise uses half the building width multiplied by the pitch ratio. Top-chord geometry applies the Pythagorean theorem to the half span plus overhang.
Understanding the result
The selected truss type labels the planning case, but it does not change web configuration, member forces or plate design. Optional cost is quantity multiplied by the entered supplier allowance. Gable end frames, piggyback sections, dropped gables, valley sets, bracing packages, delivery and crane service may be separate.
Truss type reference
| Option | Planning use | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Common/Fink | Typical clear attic volume | Efficient web layout for many spans |
| Attic | Room/storage zone | Loads and geometry require manufacturer design |
| Scissor | Sloped interior ceiling | Heel, bearing and web design are specialized |
| Mono/Gambrel | Asymmetric or multi-slope form | Project-specific shop drawings required |
Worked Fresno planning example
A 50-foot building at 24 inches on center has 300 spacing intervals across its length in inches divided by 24, or 25 intervals; adding the closing truss produces 26. A 30-foot width at 6:12 creates 7.5 feet of rise before heel height or detailed truss geometry.
Fresno-specific considerations
Actual truss design must account for adopted wind, seismic, dead and live loads, roof covering weight, ceiling loads, equipment, solar, bearing and connection details. Shop drawings, permanent bracing and installation instructions must come from a certified manufacturer and qualified design professionals.
Permit scope and required documents should be confirmed with the City of Fresno Building Permit Center before construction.
